A revolution for people with Celiac Disease: The First 100% gluten-free cruise sets sail

  • Jun 24, 2026 10:13

In 2028, the world’s very first 100% gluten-free cruise will set sail for England, Ireland, and Scotland. Aboard the Oceania Vista, 11 restaurants (free from cross-contamination) will be available to travelers with celiac disease.

For those living with celiac disease, planning a vacation often turns into a psychological nightmare. The constant threat of cross-contamination on their plates, the need to question the waiter, and the limited variety of traditional menus (not to mention the lack of options) rob travelers of any sense of carefree enjoyment.

A true revolution, however, is set to set sail—literally—in May 2028, with the promise of eliminating all food-related anxiety. This special and historic cruise will radically eliminate the presence of wheat and wheat derivatives throughout the ship, transforming every dining venue into a protected and certified oasis.

The origins of the project and the turning point aboard the Oceania Vista

Behind this innovation in tourism lies the experience of Celiac Cruise, an agency founded in 2018 in Virginia by Maureen Basye, created after her young son Peter—then just four years old—was diagnosed with celiac disease. Initially, the business focused on booking private dining rooms on Royal Caribbean ships, but high demand led the company to turn its attention to luxury cruise ships.

In collaboration with the Celiac Disease Foundation and Oceania Cruises, this partnership will result in an exclusive itinerary from May 31 to June 12, 2028, aboard the flagship Oceania Vista. This culinary gem will sail for twelve nights amid the breathtaking landscapes of the British Isles.

Eleven Michelin-starred restaurants and no compromises for the palate

The true feat of the initiative lies in the complete elimination of gluten from all kitchens, pantries, and cafeterias on board the ship for the entire duration of the voyage. Passengers will have the opportunity to dine at eleven top-tier gourmet restaurants, with the freedom to order any dish without fear of becoming ill. The range of choices will span from traditional Tuscan specialties to exceptional cuts of meat at the Polo Grill steakhouse, Asian dishes at Red Ginger, and the flavors of classic French cuisine at Jacques—all complemented by 24-hour in-cabin service.

A dream itinerary and the power of sharing

While the crew undergoes rigorous food safety training, the ship will set sail from the port of Southampton. The voyage includes major cultural and historical stops along the coasts of Dublin, Liverpool, and the village of Cobh, before setting course for the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, the Orkney Islands, and Edinburgh.

Beyond the purely culinary aspect, the onboard experience aims to foster a strong sense of belonging among people who face the same daily challenges and who, at last, can enjoy a few days of dining in complete peace of mind, without the risk of becoming ill.
