Summer vacations for over 65: after decades, Genoa relaunches initiative to combat loneliness

  • Jun 10, 2026 09:13

After more than thirty years of absence, the city of Genoa is reviving one of the initiatives most eagerly awaited by seniors: summer getaways, by the sea or in the mountains, for those over 65. This project aims to transform simple vacations into a genuine opportunity for socializing, physical activity, and sharing

The initiative is part of the "Estate Sicura 2026" ("Safe Summer 2026") program. It was created to address an increasingly pressing reality: during the summer months, many older adults find themselves facing loneliness, especially in a city like Genoa, where the senior population makes up a significant portion of residents.

Five destinations between the sea, hills, and mountains

Participants will be able to spend 7 days and 6 nights in one of the five locations selected by the organizers. The options range from the mountain resorts of Cavalese and Falcade, to the rolling hills of Roccaforte di Mondovì, to the seaside resorts of Bellaria-Igea Marina and Riccione.

Each participant may list three preferences from among the available destinations. The stays will be organized between June and September and will include not only lodging and meals but also activities designed to promote socialization and physical well-being.

Affordable rates and financial assistance of up to 100%

One of the most important aspects of the project is its affordability. Participation fees will range, as a rough guide, from 300 to 600 euros. This rate includes round-trip travel, accommodation at the host facility, full board, and supervised activities.

For individuals facing financial hardship, a sliding-scale assistance system has been established, based on the ISEE social indicator (household income). Individuals with an ISEE between 0 and 1,000 euros (annual basis) will be eligible for full coverage of costs. Above that threshold, financial support will gradually decrease to 10% of the total amount for households with an ISEE between 12,000 and 13,000 euros. Above this threshold, no assistance will be provided.

Who is eligible and what are the priority criteria

The stays are open to all residents of the city of Genoa who are at least 65 years old and can demonstrate their independence. Individuals with partial loss of independence may participate only if accompanied by a trusted relative for the entire duration of the stay.

Special attention will be given to older adults already attaining support from social services and to those living in situations marked by significant economic or relational difficulties. Among the priority criteria is also residence in areas affected by major urban construction projects. This decision aims to offer a respite to those who endure the daily nuisances associated with the construction work.

A project focused on “aging well”

The initiative is part of the municipal administration’s policy promoting active aging, building on existing programs such as “Sport Senior,” which is dedicated to promoting physical activity and social inclusion among older adults.

For now, approximately 350 spots have been allocated, but this number could increase if demand exceeds expectations. This is a strong signal from a city that has chosen to reinvest in the quality of life of its oldest residents, offering them not only a vacation but also an opportunity to build connections, stay active, and fully enjoy the summer.
