Estimated at 300,000 euros, this revolutionary “T-rex leather” bag flops at auction

Yes, you read that right. Paleontology meets haute couture in a most unlikely pairing. The handbag, made from actual Tyrannosaurus rex cells, was recently the star of a one-of-a-kind auction at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris, organized by the Giquello fashion house.

Estimated at between 300,000 and 500,000 euros, the prestigious accessory unfortunately failed to find a buyer, as the bids fell short of the hoped-for amount.

An exceptional piece adorned with black diamonds and silver details, the “T-Rex Leather” is the result of a true scientific feat. It was the discovery of collagen remnants in the femur of a T-Rex fossil in Montana (United States) that made its creation possible 25 years later. “In recent years, we’ve succeeded in developing techniques and biotechnologies that allow us to instruct a cell culture to build—in quotes—real T-Rex skin in the laboratory,” Iacopo Briano, a paleontology expert who was involved in the sale, recently told AFP.

For the Drouot auction house, this is “an unprecedented event in the history of luxury”. Because beyond the sensationalism, this hybrid object serves as a true manifesto for more ethical fashion. Scientific advances have thus made it possible to create 100% biological and organic cellular leather, “without any reliance on animal farming, unlike vegan faux leather, which is often derived from plastic. “Cell-based leather opens up a new path: one of exclusivity that no longer relies on harvesting or intensive animal farming.”

However, innovation comes at a price and is not without risk.

With no comparable items on the luxury market, the Giquello house, which organized the auction, had to “come up with a price,” based both on the piece’s rarity and the colossal investments required to create it. “300,000 euros is a lot of money. At the same time, it’s one of a kind. Since rarity comes at a price, that’s the result, Alexandre Giquello remarked.

While the auction did not meet the expected success among collectors, this unprecedented experience demonstrates that the luxury of tomorrow also has a place in biotechnology laboratories.
